Troubleshooting

Use this page when Nukleio content is not saving, files are not updating, API requests are failing, or your connected portfolio is not showing the latest data.

My Portfolio Is Not Showing Updated Content

First, confirm the content was saved in Nukleio.

Check that:

  • the profile, project, file, or link update appears in the dashboard
  • you clicked the final save button after selecting files or editing forms
  • the connected portfolio is requesting data from the correct Nukleio environment
  • the portfolio is using the correct API key

If the dashboard looks correct, the issue is often caching.

Your portfolio may:

  • cache API responses in the browser
  • cache data on the server
  • use a static build that needs to be rebuilt
  • fetch data only at deployment time
  • use stale environment variables

Refresh the page, clear cache, redeploy, or rebuild depending on how your portfolio is built.

API Request Returns 401 Unauthorized

A 401 response means Nukleio could not authorize the request.

Common causes:

  • missing Authorization header
  • API key was copied incorrectly
  • API key was removed or rotated
  • request is not using the Bearer format
  • wrong environment variable is being used
  • key is being sent with extra spaces or quotes

The header should look like this:

Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY

If the key was exposed publicly, create a new key, update your portfolio, and remove the old key.

API Request Says Invalid API Key Format

This usually means the value sent to Nukleio is not a complete Nukleio API key.

Check that:

  • the key starts with nk_live_
  • the entire key was copied
  • your environment variable is loading correctly
  • your code is not sending the variable name instead of the variable value
  • no extra quotation marks are included in the actual header value

Uploaded File Does Not Appear

If a file or image does not appear in your portfolio:

  1. Confirm the file was selected in the upload box.
  2. Confirm you saved the form or page after selecting it.
  3. Check whether the dashboard shows the new file or preview.
  4. Refresh your connected portfolio.
  5. Clear cache or rebuild if your portfolio stores old API responses.

For project thumbnails, also confirm that the thumbnail was saved with the correct project.

Image Looks Wrong in the Portfolio

If an image appears cropped, stretched, blurry, or too small, the issue may be the portfolio layout rather than the upload itself.

Try these fixes:

  • upload a higher-resolution image
  • use a more consistent aspect ratio
  • crop the image before uploading
  • avoid screenshots with tiny text
  • check the portfolio CSS for image sizing behavior

Nukleio stores the image, but your portfolio controls how it is displayed.

Project Is Missing Information

If a project appears without a link, date, image, or technology list, check the project record in Nukleio.

Make sure:

  • optional fields were actually filled in
  • the project was saved after editing
  • technologies were selected in the correct category
  • the portfolio frontend supports that field
  • the portfolio handles empty fields intentionally

Some portfolios intentionally hide empty fields. For example, a project with no demo URL may not show a demo button.

Dashboard Charts Look Empty

Dashboard charts depend on API request activity.

If the charts are empty, it may mean:

  • no portfolio has requested data yet
  • the portfolio is using a key that has not logged activity
  • requests are being blocked before reaching Nukleio
  • you are viewing the dashboard before activity has accumulated

After connecting a portfolio, load the portfolio and refresh the dashboard.

Portfolio Works Locally But Not After Deployment

This is usually an environment variable or deployment configuration issue.

Check that:

  • the deployed site has the Nukleio API key configured
  • the deployed site uses the correct Nukleio base URL
  • environment variables were added to the correct deployment environment
  • the site was redeployed after changing environment variables
  • server-side code can access the variable at runtime

Many hosting platforms require a redeploy before new environment variables take effect.

Portfolio Works After Refresh But Not Immediately

Your portfolio may be caching Nukleio data.

Check whether the portfolio:

  • fetches at build time
  • uses incremental static regeneration
  • stores API responses in local state
  • caches requests in a server function
  • uses a CDN cache

Choose a caching strategy that matches how often you expect portfolio content to change.

General Debugging Checklist

When something does not work, check in this order:

  1. Is the content correct in Nukleio?
  2. Was the change saved?
  3. Is the portfolio using the correct API key?
  4. Is the API key sent as a bearer token?
  5. Does the API request return 200?
  6. Does the JSON response include the expected data?
  7. Does the portfolio code render that field?
  8. Is caching hiding the update?
  9. Does the deployed environment match local development?

Working through the issue in this order usually shows whether the problem is in Nukleio content, API authentication, the portfolio frontend, or deployment caching.
